DAVE Fotheringham laughed off suggestions he could be turning into a prolific midfield goalscorer despite his match-winning efforts this week.
The midfielder had scored just 21 goals in his 352 appearances for the Generals before Saturday's win at Barwell.
A goal in that 3-1 victory was followed up with both goals and a man-of-the-match award as Chesham beat promotion rivals St Albans City at The Meadow on Monday to climb to second in the Evo-Stik Premier Division table.
His first-half double came after the Saints had defender Curtis Ujah sent-off after just five minutes and, despite a second-half Lewis Toomey penalty for the visitors, the Generals held on for the win.
“It has been a long time since I have got a bottle of champagne,” said Fotheringham. “I am not prolific in front of goal but am happy to take the plaudits when they come.
“It won't happen again for a while so I will savour it.
“It was a massive three points today because we weren't at it in the second-half and were on the back foot. We defended resolutely but conceded a sloppy goal again and we have only conceded through set-pieces this season.
“We will play better this season and lose. If you want to win leagues or be challenging at the top then you need to win ugly at times.”
The win continues Chesham's unbeaten start to the season with three wins and a draw the perfect way to launch their promotion bid.
Fotheringham said: “It was always going to be a tough start and to come out with 10 points already is excellent. We won't get too carried away but it is a fantastic start.”
As the club's current longest-serving player, Fotheringham had high praise for his captain Danny Talbot who racked up 250 appearances for the Generals on Monday.
He said: “Danny has been a great servant and a great captain for this club. He is still quite young and has great experience and is well-respected.
“Talbs is an intelligent player and very good vocally and he has probably started 240 of those games so it shows how good he is as a player.
“He is important to us and he will play plenty more games for this club that is for sure.”
