Webb reclaims tennis title

GERRARDS Cross Lawn Tennis Club’s Oliver Webb beat off competition from far and wide to win the men’s singles for a second time at the club’s annual tournament.

Webb beat Great Missenden’s Tom Miller, who was last year's runner-up, in three very close sets to take the crown.

Miller broke serve once to win the first set but Webb fought back and won the second set tie-break 7-3 before a great backhand pass gave him a break of serve to go 6-5 up in the decider.

A large crowd watched as Webb went 0-40 on his serve, but with two huge first serves and two big forehands he fought back and took the match 5-7 7-6 7-5.

Webb beat Luke Willis in the quarter-finals and faced a stiff test against Erik Konig from Slovakia in the semis before he won through 6-3 5-7 10-8. George Coomber (GXLTC) won an unbelievable U8 Red final against Bobby Hornby from North Oxford 16-14. Each player had four match points dominated by big serving before Coomber managed to come through.
