Chennells ready to bring scoring form to Generals

STRIKER Michael Chennells is ready to fire Chesham United to promotion after joining the club last week.

The 26-year-old has been on the Generals’ radar for nearly two years as they look to boost their goalscoring options and get promotion to the Blue Square South.

Boss Andy Leese is a big fan of the prolific frontman and tried to sign him when he was at Southern Premier League rivals Brackley.

But Chennells decided to return to Windsor FC, now playing in the Combined Counties Premier Division after Windsor & Eton folded under financial ruin, and scored 25 goals in 22 games as they finished second.

And Leese has finally got his man after the lure of playing at a higher level was too tempting for Chennells to turn down.

He told the Examiner: “I spoke to Andy and it is clearly a club going places and I wanted to be a part of that. It is always nice when a club is after you for a while and really make you wanted.

“Going back to Windsor was good for me because I wanted to try and help them out and get some first-team football back under my belt.”

Chennells joins a tightly-knit Generals squad, back in pre-season training last week, with a steely determination to avenge their play-off semi-final defeat last season and clinch promotion.

He said: “I was wary coming into a squad that had been together so long but the lads are great and have really welcomed me. You get a feel in the dressing room that there is a real focus to get up this season which is exciting.”

Leese said: “We felt we needed another proven goalscorer in the squad for some time and Michael fits the bill.”

United were handed another boost with midfielder James Potton, who swept the Player of the Year prizes, and goalkeeper Shane Gore both penning contracts to stay at The Meadow.

The club will discover who they will take on first this season when the fixtures are released next Wednesday at 9am.
