Wales happy to be back in goalscoring groove

STEVE Wales believes he has found his shooting boots at just the right time as he hopes to fire Chesham United into the Evo-Stik Premier Division play-offs.

Wales has been the Generals’ leading goalscorer for the past two seasons but has struggled to find the net in the first half of United’s current campaign.

However, the attacking midfielder ended his goal drought with a brace against Northwood last week and scored again in Saturday’s win over Stourbridge.

And the former AFC Wimbledon man is looking to build on his recent form but insists the whole squad need to chip in with goals if they are to clinch promotion.

“I think I am starting to get back to the sort of form I know I’m capable of,” said Wales. “I still need to get a few more goals between now and the end of the season to make it look a bit more respectable and I’ll be looking to do that in the coming games.

“I scored two against Northwood [in the 6-0 Red Insure Cup third round win] and now I have followed that up [against Stourbridge} but I need to start chipping in with a few more.

“JP [James Potton] is scoring a few and Leon [Archer] and Thommo [Simon Thomas] so we all need to chip in and pull our weight. I’m pleased for the team but I personally need to keep scoring a few more and keep the run going.”

Wales’ deadly accuracy in front of goal earned him Chesham’s Players’ Player of the Season award last year and hopes to match his goals total from last term and secure a play-off spot for the Generals.

“Goalscoring is a big part of my game,” he said. “I guess if I can get near to what I achieved last year I would be happy with that. I think I got close to 20 last season, so if I can get something like that I’d be happy. “

“The play-offs are the main aim and anything else is a bonus but we’ll see what happens. There are about 17 games to go and we need to win as many as we can so we’ll have a chance of doing something. So many teams up there are capable of beating each other.”
