CHESHAM United kept their first clean sheet in six league games to lift themselves up to fourth in the table.
Generals boss Andy Leese demanded a response from his players after being on the end of an FA Cup upset at Dunstable on Saturday.
And they answered his rally cry with a superb home win over fellow promotion hopefuls Hitchin Town to maintain their 100 per cent record at the Meadow.
After a tight first-half it was Chesham who broke the deadlock immediately from the restart when Chris Watters met a Steve Wales cross at the back post to head in.
The second goal came on 72 minutes when a 30-yard Danny Talbot free-kick bounced over Hitchin goalkeeper Martin Bennett to seal the win for United.
They travel to bottom-side Hemel Hempsted on Saturday.
