Mixed opening week for Harriers

THE FIRST Chiltern Cross-Country League match of the season brought mixed fortunes for Chiltern Harriers – with the juniors making their best start to a season and the senior men making one of their worst.

The courses at a blustery Wigmore Valley Park, Luton, were firm and fast but with a testing short hill on each lap, which the U11 teams took in their stride to record wins.

For the senior women, Sian Thomas confirmed her good recent form with a career-best third place.

Alison Young was 14th, Kirstie Elliott 25th and Judith Orr 30th in the fourth best team of the day. The Veterans’ team of Young, Orr, Mairead Campbell (39th) and Sarah Caulfield (44th) won their league competition.

For the senior men, only James Repper (23rd) was in the top 100 and the team was a lowly 12th from the 14 teams in the league. Overall, the club lies a solid seventh.
