'Exciting' season predicted by Waddock

BLUES boss Gary Waddock expects an exciting League Two campaign that will start with a tough trip to newly-promoted York City.

The Wanderers chief now knows the path his side will take when the new league season kicks-off on August 18 after the fixtures were released this week.

It will begin with a lengthy trip up to Conference play-off winners City before they host Gillingham, who just missed out on the play-offs last season, and a Bristol Rovers side expected to improve under Mark McGhee.

Trips to play-off semi-finalists Southend and play-off losers Cheltenham follow before a trip to bogey side Chesterfield cap a tough opening six games.

“We start with a difficult batch of League Two games that is for sure and when you look at the fixture list you realist just how tough the division is this season,” said Waddock.

“York had a fantastic season last year and they will have momentum and confidence coming into the new season. It is a tough start but we are looking forward to it.

“There are some big clubs in the division and clubs who are spending a lot of money to try and get out of it. There are some eye-catching games and it could be an exciting season.”

A season of struggle last year ended in relegation with 25 league defeats and 88 goals conceded.

Just how Waddock's side shrug off the scars of that campaign and unite amid off-the-field distractions could shape their season and the Blues boss said they have moved on from the hurt of dropping back to League Two after a season away.

He said: “You never really get it out of your system and you always think about what you could've done differently. But we have learnt from it and you have to move on quickly.”
