Gareth Ainsworth
MATT Bloomfield heaped praise on captain Gareth Ainsworth after his first-half display inspired Wycombe's victory over Tranmere.
The 38-year-old characterised Wycombe's fighting spirit by setting up a debut goal for Matty Whichelow and scoring another as they came from behind to lead 2-1 at the break.
It was arguably one of Ainsworth's best displays of the season and received a suitable ovation when he was substituted with 20 minutes to go.
And his efforts were also recognised by team-mate Bloomfield who said his battling performance lifted the whole team.
“Gaz was brilliant in the first 45 minutes,” he said. “That is when he is at his best – running at defenders, getting in behind the full-back and getting crosses into the box.
“He was brilliant today and led by example on the pitch and set the tone for our battling display.”
