Basey insists Blues players are 'distraught' at dismal slump

GRANT Basey said the Wycombe players are ‘distraught’ after they ended a miserable January at the bottom of the table and with the worst defence in England.

The Blues left-back has seen his side ship 16 goals already in 2012 – the worst record out of all 91 clubs in the Premier League and Football League.

A heavy defeat at Brentford saw Wanderers drop to the foot of League One as they remain unable to notch back-to-back wins.

Victory over Rochdale lifted hopes of a mini-Wycombe revival but those aspirations were crushed in west London.

The sense of deja-vu has left the players at an all-time low with striker Ben Strevens tweeting the defeat was a low point of his career and goalkeeper Nikki Bull tweeting it was ‘time for some soul searching’.

“Everyone is distraught at the way things are going at the moment,” said Basey, 23. “The preparation is good, there is a real buzz and then when we go out on the pitch it all goes horribly wrong. There is no excuse for it.

“We are having the same conversations every single week. We give ourselves a lift with a good win and then we go and lose straight away.

“The players are devastated and everyone has to look at themselves and see what we can do better to get ourselves out of this mess. We have no option but to remain positive because we won’t throw in the towel.”
