Sampson happy with battling Cobblers

IAN Sampson praised his Northampton Town side after they snatched a late draw against Wycombe Wanderers.

The Cobblers were second best for much of the weekend game but earned a 1-1 draw through an 85th minute Kevin Thornton penalty.

Sampson said: "It was a fairly even game and I think you will see that a lot this season. Credit to the boys they kept going and showed great desire to get back into the game."

Wycombe took the lead on 39 minutes when Andy Sandell rifled an 18-yard free-kick into the top corner after referee Carl Boyeson signalled that Dean Beckwith had handled outside the box.

The visiting bench were furious that the officials did not spot that the offence occurred in the box but Sampson felt the decision was harsh.

He said: "I think the free-kick for their goal was a contentious decision but Wycombe are a good team with good players and I am sure they will be up there come the end of the season."
