Riding roughshod over pupils on foot

I write in response to your article on a £350,000 cycle path between Chalfont St Peter and St Giles which I read in astonishment. Read

Great news for Chalfont cycle path

I am delighted that a cycle path is being planned between Chalfont St Peter and Chalfont St Giles. Congratulations to the three Councils concerned.Read

Fill potholes instead

After reading the front page story about traffic lights at every junction to reduce exhaust fumes I felt compelled to respond to this proposal. Surely traffic lights would make the traffic stop for various lengths of time (with engines running), which would cause more pollution. I believe we would benefit from allowing traffic to flow at a safe speed through the town with as little hindrance as possible. Read

Nazi comparison could not be further from truth

Thank-you for the opportunity to reply to your letter in these columns. Yes, the current economic times are indeed difficult and the Council has had to respond in a responsible manner. I cannot comment on the Amersham Town Council, but you can always contact their Chesham Bois representative, Councillor Martin Phillips.Read

Phone about faults

One perhaps tends to think of potholes primarily as potential causes of damage to one's car and so, naturally, look out for and avoid them. However by so doing one's attention to other aspects of driving safely must inevitably be reduced. It is therefore important that pothole free roads are the norm and when potholes develop they are dealt with as a matter of urgency.Read

Defending council plans

In reply to Cllr Howells letter in last weeks Examiner where he criticises Bucks County Council for abolishing the Local Area Committee in favour of Local Area Forums, we would like to point out some facts. Read

Progress for peace

IT was interesting to read (Feb 12) that the Chiltern Peace and Justice Group have reformed and reactivated to raise awareness about conflicts - Gaza; Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan were mentioned.Read

Ability not ethnicity

The letter writer 'Judge on merit, not ethnic background' (Letters, February 12) is incorrect in his assertion that I am calling for anyone to obtain a position based on their ethnic background.Read

Dither about a doll

Few things make me more annoyed than self-righteous people like Andrew Wilton lecturing the rest of us on racial harmony, and all over some golliwog dolls.Read

Parish councils are irreplaceable

Councillor Chris Howell implying this council was acting like the Nazis over local democracy did make me smile.Read

Light up potholes

Last year I was listening to a BCC councillor being interviewed on Radio London. He explained that the money saved on lighting would be spent on maintaining the roads. To any of your readers who use the local roads they would know that this has not been the case, in particular the A 413 between Gerrards Cross & Tatling End Ð which is becoming lethal.Read

No risk of liability

Our Parish Council (Chalfont St Giles) received a letter from a Parishioner, asking us to organise the gritting of a pavement.Read

Selling golliwogs is either naive or racist

I was dismayed to read (Examiner February 12) that a local toy shopkeeper finds it acceptable in this day and age to sell Gollywog dolls.Read

14 councillors have 'gold-plated' futures

D0 your readers know that 14 County Councillors are members of the Bucks CC Council Pension scheme?Read

Onus should not be put on neighbours

Chiltern is regarded as an efficient planning authority because they tick the boxes for prompt determination; it is sad that there aren't more boxes determining the quality of those decisions. It is rather like comparing a burger and chips from a burger bar with the offerings of a cordon bleu chef. Read

Refuse piled up for more than a week

I live in a terrace cottage in Hivings Hill and do not have the luxury of having space to store large amounts of refuses.Read

Let's take a leaf out of St Helens' book

An open letter to Councillor PriestleyRead

Council should justify parking fees

I notice with disgust the decision by Chiltern District Council to increase the full day parking fee by 25 per cent from £4 to £5.Read

Keeping channels of information open

As a past Parish Councillor myself I can understand the views expressed in Chris Howell's letter on February 12. The Chiltern Local Committee has been well received by parish and town councils, however the introduction of Local Area Forums will enable local residents to have an increased say over the delivery of services. Read

Council should set example to citizens

'Nameand Address Supplied' as he describes himself (February 5) as in 'a relatively senior position in local government' rant against the 'Chiltern Angry Brigade' seems misplaced. Read
