Uncertain future

MANY people are understandably concerned about the future of libraries. We have heard this week that those in Great Missenden, Farnham Common, Chalfont St Peter, Iver and Gerrards Cross, could soon be run by members of the community instead of the county council.

Libraries are a hugely important community service, and we should do all we can to try to preserve them for this and future generations.

The community library scheme is already working well in Chalfont St Giles and Little Chalfont, and has been for some time.

It is a fact that Bucks County Council has to make huge cuts during the next few years, and it will no longer be able to offer some of the services it currently provides.

If all these libraries do end up being run by the community, it will be essential that people volunteer to help run them, to ensure that these vital elements of community life continue to thrive.
