Teenagers to perform 1812 Overture

TEENAGE musicians spent a couple of hours recording a special performance for BBC Radio 3 at the weekend.

Members of the Senior Orchestra, who meet at the Amersham Music Centre every Saturday morning, were recorded performing Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture for a radio broadcast at Amersham School on Saturday (April 28).

Producer Sarah Taylor is putting together the programme featuring a live concert by the Halle Orchestra which will see the Senior Orchestra performing in the interval.

She said: "The 1812 is a perennial favourite and something which all professional musicians play over and over. And dare I say it, some of them are probably fed up of playing it - however, it’s the most exciting piece to play for the very first time which is what my programme is about.

"The children come from primary and secondary schools in the Chesham and Amersham areas and range in age from 11 to about 16.

"They are playing the piece for the very first time so my programme has been eavesdropping on their rehearsals, enthusiastically conducted by Fiona Jacob and with little interviews with the children."

The show will air at 8.10pm on May 16.
