McClure called up to Northern Ireland U21 squad

Matt McClure

BLUES striker Matt McClure has been called up to the Northern Ireland U21 squad to boost their European Championship hopes.

The 20-year-old has represented them at U19 level and will hope to feature in their qualifer in Macedonia next Thursday (10/5).

It was a mixed campaign for the youngster, who signed a new two-year deal last April, after spending four months on the sidelines with a broken ankle before returning to score his first professional goal at Scunthorpe.

And boss Gary Waddock is expecting McClure to learn from the ups and downs of the past 12 months and kick on next season.

He said: “It is a great boost for him (the call-up) and he has had a season where he has learnt a lot. There have been highs and lows but that is what professional football is all about.

He is a very talented young player and next season he needs to hit the ground running and stake a claim because a lot of young players have potential but don't fulfil it.

He has to do that now.”
