Club together for more cash

Posted by Julie Voyce on November 2, 2007 10:17 AM

A HISTORICAL day centre for pensioners in Chesham which will get a vital cash injection if moves to share its facilities with a social club in the town come to fruition during the next six months.
A plan, made public on Monday, envisages Chesham's Conservative Club sharing with the McMinn Centre in East Street. Under the plan the Conservative Club would use the cellar and some of the upstairs facilities at the McMinn Centre. Currently, the centre - which costs around £180,000 to run each year - operates an annual £20,000 shortfall. The new rental money would radically minimise that shortfall.

Pub wins top award

Posted by Julie Voyce on November 2, 2007 4:09 PM

MANAGERS at a Chesham pub have scooped a prestigious CAMRA real ale award – a worthy testimony to their hard work and dedication.
Peter Broom and Sandra Taylor (pictured), who run the Rose and Crown pub in Hawridge, won the Central South Pub of the Year award.
Dave Badminton, chairman of the mid-Chilterns branch of CAMRA, said: “This means they are through to the last 16 pubs in the whole country out of the thousands in Britain.
“It has been a number of years since a Bucks pub has had this honour and it has been achieved by hard work and dedication to the beer quality and service overall by Peter and Sandra, who have only been in Hawridge for the past two years.”
Mr Broom said: “Sandra and I are overwhelmed by this honour.
“It is a significant boost for us and we enjoy being part of the community up here in Hawridge, where we put the accent on good food and drink.”
To celebrate bonfire night on Saturday, regulars are being invited to a mini beer festival, firework display, barbecue and a live band, Brahma’s. Entry £4 for adults and £2 for children. Fireworks start at 7pm.

A CHESHAM teenager is carving out a niche as a composer of note – at the tender age of just 14.
Natasha Michael, of Vale Rise, is so gifted that she has been asked to compose the music for an upcoming school production.
A musical all rounder, Natasha plays the viola and the piano with distinction but now she is endeavouring to compose a suitable score for Chesham High School’s pre-Christmas show of the late Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, which is about witchunts in Salem.

Team Bath knocked Chesham out of the FA Trophy in a flurry of goals at the Meadow on Saturday.
In the first half Chesham could not cope with the pace and movement of a team who are virtually full-time professionals, but can take some consolation in a much-improved second half performance and in scoring three goals against a side who have only conceded 8 in 11 matches in the premier division.
