Crime prevention advice

Posted by Julie Voyce on April 13, 2007 1:00 PM

The temperature is meant to rise this weekend and police hope that burglaries don’t follow suit.
Inspector Richard Vine from Amersham police station is appealing directly to residents to keep their belongings safe this weekend.
He said: “Burglars often creep through unlocked back doors and windows and grab the nearest valuables, particularly handbags, wallets, laptops and computers. They are opportunists and take advantage of open windows and unlocked doors. As the weather is meant to be nice this weekend we are advising residents to take extra precautions to protect their property by adopting some simple crime prevention initiatives.”

• Keep all windows on the ground floor shut at night and only open during the day if you are in the room which has the open window.
• Keep your back door locked and only open when you need to
• Do not leave keys in your doors or window locks.
• Remove all keys, handbags and purses/wallets from sight
• Fit a burglar alarm if you can.

The warm weather may tempt you to visit some of the outstanding beauty spots in the Chilterns this weekend and we offer similar advice to motorists.

• Do not leave valuables on display in your car
• Remember to always lock your car when leaving it unattended

Blissett to leave United

Posted by Julie Voyce on April 13, 2007 1:18 PM

LUTHER BLISSETT will leave The Meadow at the end of the season. He will complete his contract with the final three games of the campaign.
The decision – understood to be mutual – was made with chairman Charles Manchester on Tuesday, April 9, following United’s woeful performance over the Easter weekend with defeats to Oxford City and Uxbridge.
Chesham have taken just two points from their last nine games.
Blissett said he was bitterly disappointed by the holiday performances, finally admitting that Chesham were not going to reach the play-offs.
“I went to Chesham to do a job, to get back into the Premier Division,” he said.
“First we aimed for the automatic promotion spot, then the play-offs.
“The weekend was very difficult for me as I realised we were not going to do it.”

Stub It Out with Sean O'Hare - Week 3

Posted by Julie Voyce on April 13, 2007 1:42 PM

Sean%20O%27Hare%20.jpg

IT ALL started with a cigarette. My whole weekend was ruined by the lighting of one cigarette and it wasn't even I that smoked it.
Up until that point on Saturday at 3pm I had behaved impeccably. I had drunk tea with mother before washing my car and treating it to some oil.
Instead of hoovering the inside, I decided to pick up a friend and whale at the gym. Unfortunately, as we arrived, it closed, so while I suggested press ups outside or perhaps a run, he lit a cigarette and suggested the pub.
You're a prat, boy, I thought.

Passing the political baton

FOR the first time in 37 years, Bernard Curson is one name that won't be appearing on the ballot paper for the local government elections in May.
Loyal to Chiltern District Council since its inception in 1974, councillor Curson will relinquish his duties as Conservative district councillor for Chalfont St Giles on May 8, believing "the time has come" to pass on the political baton.
Entering politics in 1970, Mr Curson first represented Amersham Rural District before it amalgamated with Chesham Urban District to become Chiltern District Council in 1974. Since then he has consistently polled more votes than any other candidate.
Looking back over the high and low points of his 37 years with the council, he said: "The building of a main drainage sewage system is certainly one of the most important council improvements and one that tends to get overlooked by the public.
"The building of the council chambers in Amersham is another.
"Before that we were all in prefabricated buildings that were rather Dickensian."

The Plough, Hyde Heath. Bookings on: 01494 783163.

by Martyn Pritchard

WHAT a great job Chris Herring and his team are doing at The Plough in Hyde Heath.
This fantastic village – which boasts one of the best shows in the area – has long needed the local pub to be demonstrably on form.
The Plough has known some dark days in recent years. But, happily, it is now all sweetness and light, thanks to the team.

View From the House: MP Cheryl Gillan

Cheryl Gillan, MP for Chesham and Amersham, writes:-

A QUESTION OF AGEISM?

MOIRA Stuart, the newsreader, made the news herself recently when it was reported that she has lost her job because of her age.
This made me think hard because I will soon be the same age as Miss Stuart and I should hate to think I would be judged purely on age rather than experience and ability.
Any woman in public life knows that, when speaking in public, one’s words may be forgotten, but what one is wearing will always be remembered.
